HOW DOES MICRONEEDLING WORK?
SkinPen by Bellus Medical is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device. Micro-needling is a form of collagen induction therapy, using tiny needles to stimulate the body’s natural wound healing response. In this response, new tissue and skin cells are formed, producing significant improvements to the tone and texture of the skin.
There are three phases to the wound-repair process:
Phase I: Inflammation. Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.
Phase II: Proliferation. The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops.
Phase III: Remodeling. The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

IS THERE DOWNTIME AFTER SKINPEN?
The total healing time depends on each individual. Most patients have some slight swelling and redness/pinkness (like a mild to moderate sunburn) for two to four days following the microneedling procedure. Some people may see their skin return to normal in about 24 hours.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED?
The number of procedures required will be based upon your individual procedure goals and the overall health of your skin. Most patients receive a series of three procedures spaced about four weeks apart.
